Canadian Federation of University Women
Haliburton Highlands
The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW), founded in 1919, is a bilingual, national and international non-partisan organization. Membership is open to any woman who is a university graduate, or has earned a professional qualification that currently requires a university or college degree. Its members continue to learn, participate in public affairs, promote education and improve the status of women and human rights. There are 121 clubs across Canada.
In the summer of 2003, five Haliburton women, previous members of CFUW clubs elsewhere, decided to establish a local club. Eighteen attended the original September meeting and by May 2004, membership stood at 37. CFUW: Haliburton Highlands received its official charter in July 2004 and its membership has grown to 40.
This non-profit, self funded group meets monthly, providing its members with opportunities for friendship and learning through an educational program incorporating social and cultural issues. As well, various interest groups engage members who share an enthusiasm for similar activities (like books and bridge and cooking).
Club members raise funds to support various community endeavours.
